Worth area metal scene. These two new galleries feature Warlock and Rotting Corpse captured live at the notorious Circle A Ranch in Dallas, Texas circa 1985. Worth from the summer of 1985. Mulqueen would later become a roadie for Pantera and can be seen featured in several of Pantera's Home Video releases. The highly anticipated return of San Antonio's longest running metal institution known as Robb's MetalWorks is nearly upon us. Creator/director/host Robb Chavez is a long-time proponent of Texas metal whose weekly television show provided support to untold numbers of bands over the past eight years. Robb's MetalWorks made its debut in 1997 and since that time Chavez has worked tirelessly to promote both local and national metal bands by providing exposure to a wide television audience. Feeling the need for some downtime and a chance to recharge the batteries, Chavez closed the book on Robbs MetalWorks in June of 2004. Now, refreshed from his break and with a new 'Crew of Mayhem' in his corner, Chavez is set to come roaring back to the airwaves in January 2005 with a revamped 2-hour/bi-monthly format. For those outside of the San Antonio, Texas viewing area, the new Robb's MetalWorks website will soon offer streaming video of each new episode for online viewing. Texas metal fans rejoice!
In an exclusive to texasmetalunderground.com, Robb has allowed us to share a first peek at the retooled intro credits to the show. This new intro gives a small glimpse of what is in store on the coming months for a show consistently noted for its professionalism and quality production values. Download the new intro at this location (4.7 MB wmv file).

Audio Section Update - The audio department has been updated with excerpts from the demos of two of the 1980's premier underground Texas metal bands: Karian and Final Assault. The Karian material is culled from various sources ranging from radio broadcasts, demos, and rehearsals to provide a wide-ranging picture of this great underrated San Antonio band. Corpus Christi's Final Assault released only one demo in their too brief existence. This rare self-titled 1985 recording is presented with audio pulled directly from an original tape.

Monster Underground (formerly Monster Records) has set today as the release date of the long awaited re-issue of WatchTower's first album Energetic Disassembly on CD. This new pressing restores the original song order that was inexplicably changed on a previous CD re-issue by German label Institute Of Art Records in 1997. As an added bonus, the new Monster Underground release comes with a 10 page booklet with photos, lyrics, and liner notes. See an advertisement for all of the WatchTower recordings available through Monster Underground at this location.
In an exclusive to texasmetalunderground.com, singer Jason McMaster recently commented on the enduring nature of this classic album: "To make a record while you're in high school, and then during the 20 years later, fans and critics have been hanging a legacy to it...is an honor."

Quick update this week...A great new interview with WatchTower/Spastic Ink guitarist Ron Jarzombek has been posted over at ElectricBasement.com. Jarzombek reveals some new details on the recording of the long-awaited WatchTower album Mathematics. Says Ron: "...I really think it’s going to happen now. Before, it was a joke thing. It seems like whenever we do these gigs – we did Bang Your Head (festival) first – after we did that in 2000, I went to Austin and was writing with them for several months. And that died off. We tried to record three pre-production songs and never got finished. We were asked to do more shows. We got more motivated, and it looks like we’ll get it done." Read the entire interview here.

New WatchTower 2004 gallery added. Check out some candid and live shots from WatchTower's brilliant May 1st live performance in San Antonio, Texas. On Saturday May 1st, a capacity crowd at Sam's Burger Joint in San Antonio witnessed the return of Texas legends WatchTower to the stage. To call their performance amazing would be a severe understatement, as the band seemingly had enough energy that night to destroy everything within a 5 mile radius. Instead of a song-by-song review we'll just briefly mention some highlights: an amazing rendition of Tyrants In Distress that had the entire club singing along; Jason balanced so close to the edge of the stage that he actually used the shoulders of fans on the front row to steady his feet; Ron having to resort to his backup guitar after a collision with Jason's microphone caused his main instrument to short out completely; Doug's twisted, drooling facial expressions that make it look as if playing these songs is causing him great pain; having members of such classic Texas metal bands as Militia, Devastation, Eldritch Rite, and Rotting Corpse in attendance and singing along to every word; Jason's heartfelt comments regarding San Antonio metal landmarks of the 80's such as La Villa Fontana and the Cameo Theater; an unbelievable extended encore that included a note-perfect rendition of Side One of Rush's 2112 album; and a truly scary moment at the end of the show that occurred as Jason attempted a Scorpion's style pyramid standing on the knees of Jarzombek and Keyser that resulted in a dislocated knee for Ron and had McMaster calling for an ambulance! Luckily, Ron was able to shake it off and walk off the stage with a smile on his face. The guys over at Monster Records took some great photos of the show that can be viewed here. Special mention must be made of Robb Chavez and his crew for setting up and delivering a show that's sure to be remembered well into the future. Look for a two hour special covering the entire event to air on Robb's MetalWorks soon!
